VGMA24: Black Sherif Wins Artiste of the Year

VGMA24: Black Sherif Wins Artiste of the Year – Black Sherif was adjudged Artiste of the Year at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

This means that he takes over from last year’s winner, Dennis Nana Dwamena who is widely known as KiDi.

He beat the likes of KiDi, Piesie Esther, Joe Mettle, Camidoh, and King Promise to win the most prestigious award on the night.

About Black Sherif

Black Sherif hails from Konongo-Zongo in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, where he was born and raised. With his parents residing overseas, he spent his childhood living with his aunt and other extended family members, leading to a nomadic lifestyle that exposed him to diverse influences and cultures from an early age.

He received his basic education at Konongo Zongo Islamic Basic School and later attended Pinamang Educational Complex, where he completed junior high school (J.H.S). His secondary education took place at Kumasi Academy, where his passion for music and dancing began to develop.

He is a former student of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) and is currently pursuing his studies at the University of Ghana.

In 2019, Black Sherif made his debut in the music industry with the release of his song “Cry for Me” on YouTube. He gained further recognition with his debut single “Money,” which was accompanied by a music video and released on May 25, 2020.

The release of his single “First Sermon” in May 2021 expanded his audience, and he followed up with “Second Sermon” in July, featuring a remix with African artist Burna Boy.

His breakthrough came in March 2022 with the release of his single “Kwaku the Traveller,” which topped the charts on Apple Music in Ghana and Nigeria, becoming his most popular song to date. In October, he released his debut album, “The Villain I Never Was,” supported by the singles “45” and “Soja.”

Black Sherif had the opportunity to perform at the 25th anniversary of the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards held at the OVO Arena in Wembley, UK. Additionally, he hosted his debut concert, the “Mozama Disco Concert,” in Accra in December 2022.

On 20 February 2023, Black Sherif was honored with the Best Hip Hop award at the Soundcity MVP Awards, which took place at the Eko Convention Center in Lagos.

In April 2022, a lawsuit was filed against Black Sherif alleging a breach of contract. The dispute arose after Sherif signed a deal with Empire, leading to CEO Shadrach Agyei Owusu from Waynes Chavis Consult seeking court intervention to restrict Black Sherif from performing at events without his authorization.

However, the Accra High Court (Commercial Division) dismissed the injunction, allowing Black Sherif to continue performing his music released under his previous management.
