LIVERPOOL — Liverpool FC have completed the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in a €35 million transfer, the club confirmed Friday. The 24-year-old right-back arrives as a direct replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose departure to Real Madrid was made official earlier in the day.
Frimpong signed a long-term contract at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre after completing his medical, becoming the first major acquisition under new manager Arne Slot. According to reports from The Athletic, the deal will keep the defender at Anfield until June 2030.
“Liverpool FC have agreed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The Netherlands international put pen to paper on a long-term contract… after successfully passing a medical,” read the official club statement.
Frimpong, a standout performer in Leverkusen’s recent Bundesliga title run, expressed enthusiasm about his move to Merseyside. “For me, it was a no-brainer. Liverpool came with interest and I told my agents: ‘Just get this done,’” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all—my energy, my work-rate. I’m just excited to be here.”
The signing arrives at a pivotal moment for Liverpool, who are preparing for life without Alexander-Arnold following his free transfer to 15-time Champions League winners Real Madrid. Frimpong is expected to compete for a starting role alongside Conor Bradley, who recently signed an extension through 2029.
The former Manchester City academy product played a vital role in Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side last season, contributing five goals and five assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances. Despite Leverkusen finishing second to Bayern Munich, Frimpong’s attacking prowess and defensive reliability elevated his profile across Europe.
His arrival could be just the beginning of a Leverkusen-to-Liverpool pipeline, with Florian Wirtz, valued at €150 million, reportedly also on the Reds’ summer radar. Liverpool are believed to be leading the race for the midfielder, ahead of Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
As Liverpool look to reinforce their squad for another Premier League title run, Frimpong represents both an immediate solution and a long-term investment in the club’s evolving backline.
