AfDB, AU to Host High-Level Dialogue on Visa-Free Travels

The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Union (AU) will host a High-Level Strategic Dialogue on February 12, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focused on accelerating visa-free travel as a catalyst for Africa’s economic transformation.

The event will bring together ministers, business leaders, academics, and policy experts to explore how easing visa restrictions can advance Africa’s regional integration, boost trade, and spur economic growth. Visa-free travel is seen as vital to the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to create the world’s largest single market.

The dialogue follows the launch of the Africa Visa Openness Index 2024, which highlights progress by African nations in reducing travel barriers. Several countries have implemented visa-free or visa-on-arrival policies, with the aim of enhancing trade, tourism, and investment flows across the continent.

Economic benefits of visa-free travel include strengthening intra-African trade, increasing cross-border business activity, and attracting entrepreneurs and investors. This, in turn, is expected to boost economic growth, promote innovation, and create a more competitive African market.

However, the initiative faces challenges such as security concerns, inadequate border infrastructure, and slow policy implementation. The upcoming meeting will focus on identifying practical solutions to address these obstacles and fast-track the integration of visa-free travel across Africa.

With Africa’s economy poised for growth, visa-free movement is seen as a critical driver of the continent’s transformation, positioning it as an attractive destination for investment and business expansion
