As of today, 17h July 2024, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 36 cases from both Eastern and Central Regions.
On Monday, July 14, 2024, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) issued a press release declaring an outbreak of Dengue in certain districts of the Eastern Region.
Before this announcement, healthcare workers had identified 36 cases in various communities across both Eastern and Central Regions, using a standardized case definition to detect the disease.
The GHS officially confirmed the cases on Wednesday.
“As at today, 17th July 2024, we have confirmed 36 cases from both Eastern and Central Regions,” an excerpt of the statement said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized dengue as one of the 10 biggest public health threats in 2019.
The GHS has since intensified efforts to contain the outbreak, implementing measures to prevent further spread and protect public health.
A team of experts was sent to the affected areas to investigate the outbreak. They worked with local health officials to look into the sudden increase in malaria-like cases in several districts.
As part of this investigation, more samples were sent to a laboratory for testing to help understand the outbreak better.
The statement further urged the public, especially those in affected areas, to take preventive measures against mosquito bites by doing the following:
1. Wear protective clothing.
2. Use mosquito repellents.
3. If you must keep water containers around your home, ensure it is tightly covered.
4. Discard water in containers if the water is not being used.
5. On the farms, also ensure that receptacles that could collect water such as empty cocoa pods, coconut shells, etc.) are discarded (crushed, buried, etc) properly.
6. If sleeping during the day or outside, sleep in an insecticide-treated bed net.
7. Do not self-medicate: report to the nearest health facility when you have high-grade fever.
