Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and Vice President of Ghana, has announced the impending launch of the country’s first credit scoring system on November 7. This move marks Ghana as the second country in Africa, after South Africa, to establish a credit scoring infrastructure aimed at expanding access to credit for its citizens.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Nyinahin, in the Ashanti Region’s Atwima Mponua District, Dr. Bawumia expressed his commitment to utilizing digitalization to drive economic transformation. He noted that the new credit scoring system is expected to help Ghanaians acquire items on credit more easily, improving both their purchasing power and overall living conditions.
To support this initiative, the government has developed a robust digital infrastructure that includes the Ghana Card, a digital address system, and mobile money interoperability. These tools will enable citizens to seamlessly participate in the credit system, helping foster an inclusive financial ecosystem.
In addition to this, Dr. Bawumia highlighted several other key priorities for his presidency, including modernizing the railway system, improving passport acquisition with the Ghana Card, and extending the validity of drivers’ licenses from six to ten years. He also reaffirmed his commitment to agricultural development through the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, citing Ghana’s rank as the third most food-secure country in Africa.
He encouraged Ghanaians to support the NPP in the upcoming elections to continue implementing transformative policies like the “Buy Ghana First” initiative, aimed at promoting local goods in government projects.
Seth Osei Akoto, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Atwima-Mponua, also praised the government’s achievements, urging residents to vote for the NPP to continue advancing socio-economic development in the country.
