IMF Team Begins Meetings with Government Today

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team begins discussions with the government today, Monday, February 10, 2025, as part of a five-day visit to Accra. The talks will focus on Ghana’s economy and preparations for the upcoming 2025 Budget, which is set to be presented to Parliament in March.

The team will assess the government’s progress in negotiating with External Commercial Creditors and address challenges in the energy sector, including the ongoing energy debt crisis. Discussions will also cover potential solutions, such as the privatization of parts of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Finance Minister Ato Forson will lead the government’s delegation during this engagement, which is not a formal Review Mission but a key consultation on economic performance and budget planning. A formal review of Ghana’s programme, based on fiscal data from December 2024, is expected later this year and could unlock additional funds for the Bank of Ghana by June 2025.

The IMF’s key objectives for Ghana include improving revenue generation and reducing debt to sustainable levels. These efforts are expected to be reflected in the 2025 budget as part of the broader partnership with the IMF.
