Inquiring minds want to know if it is possible to serve their National Service at private institutions. Well, we are here to provide the answers.
According to the rules and regulations governing the National Service Scheme (NSS), it is indeed possible for individuals to carry out their national service at private establishments. However, there are a few conditions that apply
First and foremost, national service personnel posted to private companies will have their allowances paid by those companies.
Additionally, these companies will be required to pay a service charge equivalent to 20% of the personnel’s basic service allowance on a monthly basis.
This payment must be made to the Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat via a payment order.
These private establishments need to understand and accept this condition before personnel can be posted to their premises.
It is also worth mentioning that private educational institutions are exempted from paying this service charge (20%) to the National Service Secretariat.
Moreover, for national service personnel posted to Statutory Boards, Corporations, churches, or quasi-church organizations, their allowances will be paid by these establishments using their own resources.
If a private company wishes to engage the services of national service personnel, they (the company and not the personnel) must reach out to the NSS Secretariat and make the necessary arrangements with them. This ensures that all the requirements and conditions are met.
On the other hand, national service personnel posted to schools and colleges under the Ghana Education Service, Ministries, Government Departments, and other establishments will have their allowances paid from funds lodged with the government treasuries by the National Service Secretariat.
So, if you have always wondered whether you can undertake your National Service at a private establishment, the answer is yes!
Just make sure the necessary arrangements are made between the institution and the National Service Secretariat.
