President Akufo-Addo Congratulates Mfantsipim School on 2024 NSMQ Victory

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Mfantsipim School for their triumph in the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). The President lauded the students’ dedication and perseverance, noting that the victory, which came after a ten-year wait, was well deserved.

In a Facebook post, President Akufo-Addo praised the team from the prestigious Cape Coast-based institution, affectionately known as “The School,” for their hard work and determination. He also expressed his anticipation to welcome the champions to the Jubilee House in Accra for an official celebration of their remarkable achievement.

“Warmest congratulations to the gentlemen from ‘The School’, Mfantsipim, on emerging victorious in this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz competition,” the President stated.

Mfantsipim claimed the coveted title after a thrilling final, securing 47 points and overcoming fierce competition from St. Augustine’s College, also from Cape Coast, who finished as first runners-up with 46 points. Keta Senior High Technical School (SHTS) took third place with 33 points.

The victory marked Mfantsipim’s first NSMQ championship win since 2014, ending a decade-long wait and adding to their storied legacy. As champions, the school was awarded gold medals and a cash prize of GHS 70,000. St. Augustine’s College, who came in second, received silver medals and GHS 50,000, while Keta SHTS earned bronze medals and GHS 35,000 for their efforts.

The 2024 NSMQ featured a record number of 157 participating schools, highlighting the competition’s increasing significance in promoting science and mathematics education nationwide. Established in 1993 and produced by Primetime Limited, the NSMQ fosters a spirit of academic rivalry and aims to cultivate critical thinking and a scientific outlook among Ghana’s youth.

Mfantsipim’s victory reinforces the school’s reputation as a bastion of excellence in science and mathematics, joining other notable winners in the competition’s history. Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (Presec Legon) holds the record for the most wins, with eight titles to their name, followed by Prempeh College with five trophies and St. Peter’s Boys’ Senior High School with three.

The President’s acknowledgment of Mfantsipim’s victory reflects the significance of the NSMQ as a platform that inspires students across the nation to excel academically and aspire to leadership in STEM fields.
