Sony Achiba Unveils New Album "Indian Ocean"

Ghanaian musician Sony Achiba, known for his unique style of music dubbed “Hip Dia,” has released his latest project titled Indian Ocean. The album, which comes in both cassette and CD formats, features eight tracks on cassette and 10 tracks on CD. The title track, Indian Ocean, is accompanied by other notable songs such as “Mama Africa,” “Bra Bebo Me Nkomo,” “Odo Papa Bi,” and “Mehu Wahaa.”

Currently residing in London, Achiba is using his time in the city to further research his music career while also addressing some health concerns. He has undergone the first phase of medical treatment for a leg injury sustained in a lorry accident eight years ago, and is now awaiting the second phase of the operation, which took place in Italy.

In an interview from London, Sony Achiba shared that despite his medical treatment and career research, his passion for music continues to drive him forward. However, he expressed disappointment at the lack of popularity for his latest release, noting that his Ghanaian producers had shown little interest in promoting his music. He clarified that there were no issues between him and his producers, but highlighted a stark contrast between the approach of Ghanaian producers and their counterparts in London.

Achiba explained that while Ghanaian producers were reluctant to take risks, London-based producers were more encouraging, particularly toward emerging artists. He was impressed by the proactive support and work ethic of producers in London, and intends to bring some of these practices back to Ghana to benefit up-and-coming musicians.

Sony Achiba, born Emmanuel J.B. Danquah in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, initially sought to differentiate himself from the popular hiplife genre when he embarked on his music career. After two years of research, he developed Hip Dia and incorporated influences from various genres such as Soca and Salsa into his latest album.

The Indian Ocean album is available for purchase at Lucky Sounds in Kantamanto, Accra.
