Stability & Independence – Key Priority Areas of New Bank of Ghana Governor

Ghana‘s apex bank, the Bank of Ghana (BoG), under the new Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiamah is set to focus on ensuring market stability and independence of the Central Bank.

The new Acting Governor announced these priority areas on Monday, February 3, 2025, on his first day at work when he took over from the former governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, who proceeded on his terminal leave leading to his retirement, hence the President’s new appointment.

Interacting with the two other deputies of the bank, Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Addo Awadzi, the governor gave the assurance that he is committed to ensuring stability in the financial market without any disruptions.

Dr. Johnson Asiamah further indicated that he is also poised to ensure that the transition at the bank does not disturb the market and the current policy direction hence maintaining utmost stability.

“The market should have no concerns. Our work will continue without disruptions,” he told the two deputies.

He moreover promised to uphold the independence of the Central Bank while he forges unity and togetherness with the deputies while expressing the confidence of President Mahama for them to work without any difficulties.

“The President thinks that we should do this because it’s a way of enforcing our independence and encouraging a smooth transition. The public must see us working together,” he noted.

The new governor first joined the Central Bank in 1996. He rose through the ranks to become the second deputy governor in 2016. He left the bank in 2017 after the banking sector cleanup.

Dr. Johnson Asiamah has been c roles he was purported to have played in the collapse of the UniBank and UT Bank.

A few days ago, the new Attorney-General, Dr. Domince Ayine filed to discontinue the case. He was subsequently nominated for the Governorship role following the terminal leave of the former governor.
