Brigadier-General Tanye-Kulono “Commands” Ghana’s Ports

Ghana‘s port sector faces critical challenges, including high duties on import, trade competitiveness, and the Keta Port construction. Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono has been appointed Acting Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), tasked with leading the ports toward greater efficiency and regional dominance.

With a background in security strategy, dispute resolution, and operational leadership, his appointment signals a shift toward structured reform and enhanced efficiency. However, Ghana’s ports, particularly Tema and Takoradi, struggle with high duty fees, driving businesses to neighboring countries’ ports. Tanye-Kulono must implement cost-effective policies to attract businesses and maintain national revenue.

The long-awaited Keta Port project also demands attention. Brigadier-General Tanye-Kulono is expected to accelerate development, attract investors, and establish the port as a regional trade hub. Additionally, global ports are embracing digitalization, and Ghana must follow suit to remain competitive. Reducing clearance delays and streamlining operations through technology will be crucial under his leadership.

Brigadier-General Tanye-Kulono brings military discipline, negotiation skills, and strategic expertise, but success will depend on his collaboration with customs authorities, private sector engagement for Keta Port development, and improving port logistics and digital infrastructure.
