When asked about Inter fans’ desire to whistle loudly at their former player Romelu Lukaku on Sunday evening against Roma, Jose Mourinho preferred to use irony in his press conference.
Romelu Lukaku has become a persona non-grata in Milan, at least on the Inter side, and fans of the Italian team are keen to make him understand, just a few weeks after his departure to Roma.
For the Serie A match between Inter and Roma at Giuseppe-Meazza on Sunday, the Curva Nord want to blow 50,000 whistles around the stadium before the game to encourage spectators to boo Lukaku when he touches the ball.
Asked about the issue in a press conference, Jose Mourinho used irony to mock the Nerazzurri fans: “I didn’t think he was so important at Milan. What he did there, winning a Scudetto and cups, 200 players did at Inter. It’s interesting.”
Then he continued: “Lukaku going from Inter to Roma to help his mister is a tragedy. But Calhanoglu from Milan to Inter, that’s wonderful. And Cannavaro from Inter to Juve no problem, Vieri from Inter to Milan no problem either. Lukaku from Inter to Roma has become a case that scares me. I didn’t think he was so important in the hearts of a club like Inter, I’m surprised.”
Suspended after his red card against Monza, the Roma coach will not receive such a chaotic welcome, but the atmosphere promises to be electric all the same.
