Premier League REJECTS European Super League project

Premier League REJECTS European Super League project

After some of Europe’s biggest clubs have expressed their opposition to the European Super League project following the European Court ruling, the Premier League has become the second domestic competition to publicly reject the project through an official statement.

After the announcement of the European Court’s ruling in favour of the European Super League, there have been numerous different reactions to the re-launch of the case.

While Real Madrid and Barcelona, the only two clubs that have been firm supporters of the project over the last two years, have welcomed the decision of the European Court of Justice, other major European clubs such as Manchester United, Bayern and Atletico among others have expressed their opposition to the new European elite club competition.

Furthermore, not only have clubs issued official statements against the European Super League, but also the Premier League, becoming the second domestic competition to express its opposition to the new project after La Liga.

Premier League full statement

“Today’s ruling does not endorse the Super League — and the Premier League continues to REJECT any such concept. Supporters are of vital importance to the game and they have time and again made clear their opposition to a “breakaway” competition that severs the link between domestic and European football.

The Premier League reiterates its commitment to the clear principles of open competition that underpin the success of domestic and international club competitions. Football thrives on the competitiveness created by promotion and relegation, the annual merit-based qualification from domestic leagues and cups to international club competitions and the longstanding rivalries and rituals that come with weekends being reserved for domestic football”.
